A dark comedy that puts new meaning to the #MeToo movement. The film has the tone while making it enjoyable even for a Sundance art film. No wonder if got accepted to Sundance and got Oscar nominations. The best thing about this film is that it’s unlike anything you have seen before. The master craftsmanship of the story makes me think we will be seeing more from Emerald Fenneli. And good for Margot Robbie producing this gem. It gives me an entirely new respect for her. These two women will be power brokers for years to come is my prediction.

There is a blurb about the production of this movie on wikipedia. Originally the film had a much darker ending but the finances balked and had the ending punched up a little. I think that actually added a lot to the story. I found the ending made an impression on me.  So many women have suffered and had the same kind pf experience as the protagonist in this movie and it should make every man wonder if there are women living life holding on to such angry because of a society that is still terribly masochistic

While the film won best screen play I felt as if the direction was what made it work so flawlessly. But I can say honestly it deserved nominations for both. I think it is on a lot of peoples top 10 list and probably on the top of that list more often than not. It deserved the nomination for best film. I think most people will be hard pressed to find a better film. Certainly I enjoyed this more than the winner Nomadland which I enjoyed but it was not on my top 10 list so it’s disappointing that it won.

That being said this reviewer has a long history of loving Sundance type of films such as Fruitville Station. Whiplash or Wintersbone. Those great stories are not the kind of things that the movie studios are going to produce.  At least these days great films like this, that have small budgets don’t generate the commercial success that movie studio’s need to be profitable. Think about it this way. A movie studio spends $1 million dollars a day just to turn on the lights, pay for the lease and staff and thats before spending a dollar on marketing or movie production. This film which suffered from being released in 2020 only generated $13 million in business. That would only cover a movie studio for a week not even two.So they would need 50 films like this and there might only be 50 films like this made in the history of cinema.
