An 18-year-old man pleaded no contest Monday in Douglas County District Court to leaving the scene of a collision that caused the death of pedestrian near downtown Omaha.
Christopher Renteria-Avila, of Omaha, had been charged with failure to stop and render aid following a collision resulting in serious injury or death, a felony that carries a penalty of up to four years in prison. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors amended the charge to failure to stop and render aid, a felony that is punishable by up to three years in prison.
Prosecutors said Julio Estrada, 41, was hit by a 2005 Pontiac Vibe compact car driven by Renteria-Avila while walking across Abbott Drive near the Riverfront Drive intersection. The incident occurred about 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2024.
Medics took Estrada to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he died from his injuries.
