Deadhead These Flowers In August For An Extended Bloom

  • Updated
  • 0

August means summer’s ending, but garden tasks continue. Here are the plants you should deadhead this month if you want a longer bloom season. Marigolds bloom nonstop if you deadhead faded flowers. Trim tired plants by a third and feed lightly. Zinnias thrive with deadheading above leaf nodes. Prune leggy stems and feed them a bloom booster for more flowers. Petunias in containers benefit from trimming. Water deeply and mulch lightly after deadheading to encourage fresh growth. Deadhead salvias by cutting above green leaves under wilted spikes. Prune tall plants and fertilize them heavily. Geraniums get leggy by August. Cut flower stalks to their base, remove yellow leaves, and feed them every two weeks. Coneflowers need some deadheading, but leave some seed heads for pollinators and winter interest. Roses still need deadheading in August, just cut above outward-facing leaflets. Improve airflow, and water early to prevent black spot.
